Yesterday was Labor day. We were planning an uneventful day...started out by cleaning in and around the house. Getting caught up from the weekend and prepared for the week. Then I got a phone call...."What are y'all doing? We're gonna come over around 2 and hang out for bit...maybe we can BBQ." "OK, come on over! We're cleaning right now, but we'll be done by 2. See you then." 1:00 rolls around and in they come! 2 adults, 4 kids. I can handle that, that's cool. Another phone call...."Hey, what are y'all doing? We're coming over...we'll BBQ or something." "OK, come on over! The more the merrier." "We'll see you in a bit. By the way, what's ----'s phone number? I'm gonna call them and see if they want to come, too." (that's 4 more adults, 2 teens, and 3 little ones). ring, ring....."Hi! What are y'all doing? Are --- and --- there yet? I think we'll come over, too. We have a couple of errands but we'll be there in an hour or so." (one more adult and 4 more kids!) ring, ring "Are y'all at the house? We're in town, we're going to swing by." (2 more adults) ring ring "Hey can I come over?" (1 more adult) Phew! All this added to our 2 adults and 3 kids. Looks like our home is the place to be on Labor Day, eh? Hehe!

Here's a recipe that I made this week - my grandparents made the best bread in the world. Several years back, I asked for the recipe, and I got a very typical response...a little of this and a little of that. I was able to pretty much duplicate it, but I thnk the regional ingredients made a difference in the final product. Now I have a bread machine (Thanks, Trix) and adapted it to that...so this recipe is for a bread machine. It's also not plain old white bread like Memere and Pepere used to make...I take the basic recipe and make it into cinnamon raisin bread. (You can omit the cinnamon, raisins, and cut the sugar in half and have a great loaf of white bread, which is fabulous toasted or Frenched).
3 c all purpose flour (you can sub up to 1 c whole wheat)
2 t yeast
4 heaping t sugar
1 t salt
3 T shortening
1 t cinnamon
1/2 c raisins
1 c warm water
Dump everything into your 1 1/2 pound loaf bread machine, set it on sweet bread, light crust, sit back, and wait for your kitchen to make your mouth water! Enjoy!!!!!!
Have a great beack to school/work/everything else day!
